A Bustling Fall at CIHA Rental Properties

It’s been another active few months for residents of Cook Inlet Housing Authority’s elder and family rental properties.

In an effort to continually build the sense of community at our rental properties, certain Cook Inlet Housing Authority staff spend a great deal of time planning and implementing fun activities for the people who live in our facilities.

“We want Cook Inlet Housing Authority properties to be much more than just a decent, affordable place for our residents to lay their heads at night,” said CIHA President and CEO Carol Gore. “We want our properties to be places where people feel proud making their home; where they enjoy getting to know their neighbors; where they feel safe raising their children; and where they can just generally enjoy life.”

Block Party
In August CIHA hosted the Strawberry Village Cottages Block Party, inviting the 60 families of Strawberry Village, CIHA staff and residents from surrounding neighborhoods to come together for an evening of food and fun. The event was held in celebration of the final completion of the property – including the nearly $300,000 worth of landscaping.

The block party was held on a drizzly day in late August, but the weather didn’t dampen spirits or the activity level. The Anchorage Fire Department came out, talked with kids and let them crawl in and out of two different trucks. Goldrush Productions’ Giant Boombox played great music and inspired dancing in the (barricaded) street. Tons of Fun Entertainment’s “Bouncy Boxing” was a big hit with the kids, as was Marky D. Clown and his band of face painters. The event attracted more than 400 people in all, including Senator Lisa Murkowski.

Other Fun Stuff
The residents of Cook Inlet Housing Authority’s Anchorage elder properties had lots of fun – and got nice and clean - at the Second Annual Wheelchair, Walker and Car Wash. Other elder activities included a quarterly health fair sponsored in partnership with Southcentral Foundation, a resident craft bazaar and the facility’s first farmers’ market. CIHA also hosted a Labor Day picnic for the community of Ninilchik at our elder housing facility in that residents and both the elder and family rental properties in Anchorage had great Halloween festivities as well.

In addition to the special events, CIHA facilities are always bustling with regularly scheduled activities like a monthly tea, sewing club, ceramics club and resident council meetings… Strawberry Village and the new Kenaitze Pointe facility also have computer labs open to residents during regular CIHA business hours.

No time to get bored around here!
