Dancing, crafts and a visit from Santa keeps CIHA clients busy

For the third consecutive year, volunteers donated their time and energy to an evening of swinging ladies and gents around the dance floor at Chickaloon Landing (8901 Peck Ave) in celebration of the most romantic day of the year. The elder Valentines Dance has become the most popular and highly anticipated event offered at CIHA's senior rental campus in Muldoon.

This year some 100 people put on their dancing shoes and their Sunday best. While some attendees did opt to just visit and watch the crowd, the 12x12 dance floor was packed for most of the evening.

Tom Chouinard spun tunes from the 40's, 50's and 60's in between his live performance sets. Men and women from Elmendorf Air Force Base comprised a large portion of the volunteer dance troupe.

A good time was had by all, and residents are already inquiring about next year's dance!

There were also Valentine activities at Strawberry Village Cottages this month. Over 20 kids participated. They enjoyed juice and snacks while making valentines for their teachers, parents and childhood sweethearts.

Holiday Crafts Bazaar
Twenty-two crafters participated in the craft Bazaar at Salamatof Heights on December 13. Of the 22 vendors, 14 were actually residents from the various buildings on CIHA's rental campus in Muldoon. The event was open to the public and well attended, raising about $200 to help offset the costs associated with CIHA's Resident Services Program.

Visit from Santa
December 22 more than 20 children munched on cookies and sipped hot cocoa while they visited with their neighbors and waited for their turn on Santa's lap. Pictures of the children with Santa were delivered to their homes later that week. The abundance of snow this winter provided a perfect opportunity for a snowman contest. Tasty Freeze gift certificates were awarded to the winner of the contest.

Young visitors for Ninilchik elders
A Girl Scout Group has decided to adopt the elders at CIHA's rental property in Ninilchik. This month eight girls visited with six residents of Ninilchik House. They helped organize the property's library and shared birthday cake in celebration of a resident's birthday. In early spring they plan to grow flower starts which they'll plant this summer on the grounds of Ninilchik House and possibly the Ninilchik Library.

More to come.
