Holiday Activities

The holidays are being celebrated in full-force at Cook Inlet Housing Authority rental properties. Nearly fifty senior housing residents and their families enjoyed seasonal fun and games at CIHA’s Fall Carnival at Centennial Village on October 29th.

The event marked the first all-campus activity at the newest building, Tyonek Terrace. Games included the likes of a pumpkin bean-bag toss and a "bob for frogs." The grandchildren’s playroom at Tyonek Terrace was well initiated that afternoon with a cake-walk sponsored by the campus-wide Afghans for Angels charitable organization.

Between 30 and 40 kids and parents took part in similar fun and games at the Strawberry Village Cottages Fall Carnival on Thursday, October 28.

In November a senior volunteer fair was held at the Centennial Village campus in East Anchorage. Organizations such as AARP, UAA, Mary Conrad Center, the Anchorage Senior Center, Volunteers of America, Older Person's Action Group and others were there sharing information about their services and offering opportunities for older people to volunteer their time.

November 23 was the Grand Opening/Open House at Tyonek Terrace, giving CIHA partners and friends a chance to mix and mingle with the residents of our elder campus.

December is packed full of fun things to do with the CIHA bus providing transportation to the Salvation Army lunch program Christmas party at their downtown meal site on Wednesday, December 8; the third annual holiday bazaar featuring 21 crafters on December 11; and the Centennial Village Open House at Kenaitze Pointe on Wednesday, December 22 from 2-4 p.m. In addition, December 6, 13 and 20 the CIHA bus will be transporting elder residents to various shopping Mecca’s around Anchorage.

Santa will be the star of the Strawberry Village Cottages Open House on Friday, December 17. Feel free to stop by, meet residents, drink cocoa and take a sleigh ride!

Thanks again to Sally Bremmer, the Centennial Village Library Volunteer, for all her efforts… from organizing the Tyonek Terrace library before the open house on November 23, to the "My Pet is My Family" story circle she hosted in November. Sally invested a lot of time and effort in that project, interviewing tenants and creating a large poster and slide show to display the pets on campus and their stories. It gave the residents a great opportunity to get to know some of their neighbors, and they all really appreciated it. Thanks Sally!
