Breaking Ground: A Newsletter from CIHA. Promoting Independence Through Housing.

2008 Parade of Homes

In the past three years, CIHA has built and sold 25 new craftsman-style houses in Mountain View. Seventeen of our clients were first-time homebuyers. Three were large families with six to eight family members. Four of the families had experienced some stages of homelessness. Two households had disabled family members.

Dear Friends,

It's been very rewarding for me to be the Construction Manager for CIHA for the last eight years. In particular, I have been fortunate enough to have designed and built 21 homes, with an additional nine homes currently under construction, as part of CIHA's Mountain View revitalization efforts.

These are beautiful homes built with well-thought design, quality materials and workmanship -- and complete with appliances, five-star plus energy rating, and finished landscaping. With several designs available and an array of features, our intention is to make these homes desirable to a wide range of people and to attract potential buyers that might not normally consider affordable housing.

CIHA entered two of our newly-constructed Mountain View homes in the Anchorage Home Builders' Association's Annual Parade of Homes because we wanted to invite the public to take a look at what we're doing. Whenever people walk through CIHA homes, it's always rewarding to see their reaction to the quality construction. We also wanted to see how our homes would stack up against the competition. We were all thrilled when CIHA won eight awards in total, including Best Design, Best Interior, Best Exterior, and Best Overall Workmanship -- earning CIHA the Golden Hammer in the $300,000-and-under division.

This year the Anchorage Home Builders' Association decided to change things up, and for first time, area homebuilders served as judges for the competition. It was especially gratifying being recognized by a group of peers. It's an affirmation of the quality and craftsmanship that we are extremely proud of.

When CIHA made the decision several years ago to begin building our own homes in Mountain View, I wanted to help develop this program. Because I had been working with our residents through our home improvement program, I was already familiar with their needs and have been able to incorporate those features into our designs.

Our construction team has a high level of commitment and care for our residents. I believe that our dedication to the people that we serve is reflected in our award-winning work. We are all part of this community, and using our skills to improve the lives of others is rewarding in itself.

Without the exceptional expertise and commitment of our partners and management, our award-winning construction program would not be possible. I'd personally like to thank all of the following dedicated businesses and individuals:

Subcontracting Partners: Red Dog Masonry, Diamond Masonry, Ruff Drywall, Northern Sheetmetal - Partusch Plumbing, Shelton Electric, Albrights Commercial Floors, Generations Painting, Custom Concrete, EP Roofing, Northern Landscape, A-1 Fencing, Caddo Construction, Janes Bros Inc, and Carlos Insulation.

Suppliers: Spenard Building Supply, Timberline Millwork, Aurora Windows, and Overhead Doors.

CIHA Staff, Management and Board of Directors.

Thank you all!
