Frequently Asked Questions
Do you only help Alaska Natives?
No. We offer housing opportunities that are available to individuals who fall within the income guidelines (30-100% of area median income) of our programs, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, etc.
There are some programs and properties that are funded by Native American Housing Assistance and Self Determination Act (NAHASDA) which are limited to low income Alaska Native and American Indian individuals.
Different guidelines apply to different homes within our program.
What is the income cut off?
This depends on the size of your family. HUD determines the Area Median Income (AMI). Eligibility for our properties varies from 30-100% of AMI depending on the property. There are income minimums. There are also some “market rate” units available which do not have an income cut-off.

Are you only in Mountain View?
No, although we are a major contributor in the Revitalization efforts in Mountain View we also own and manage housing outside of Mountain View.
Strawberry Village Cottages, one of our family rental housing developments, is located in South Anchorage.
Grass Creek Village, which is a mixed income family rental housing development, is located on the East side of Anchorage just off Muldoon and DeBarr.
Centennial Village, our Senior Independent Living rental campus, is located off Muldoon and Peck Avenue on the East Side of Anchorage.
How long is your waiting list? I put my application in a while ago and haven’t heard anything?
As of August 2011, Cook Inlet Housing revised our application and waitlist process. Vacancies are posted each week, at 9:00 am on Wednesdays. Applicants may apply for available units only. Vacancies are filled on a first come, first served basis. Applicants must reapply each week for newly posted available units.
Do you have anything available right now?
Vacancies are posted weekly on Wednesdays at 9:00am in 5 locations: Craigslist, Cook Inlet Housing Authority's website, Cook Inlet Housing Authority's vacancy hotline 793-3020, at our main office (3510 Spenard Rd) and at on-site Community Director's offices.
I was denied once by CIHA what should I do?
You may reapply with CIHA, especially if you have had a change of status that may affect your acceptance. Depending on the reason for denial you may be eligible to reapply, for available units, immediately.
Do you take people with criminal backgrounds?
There is a criminal background check that focuses on an applicant’s criminal history over the past five years. CIHA also does a credit check and landlord reference check.
Note: Some reasons for denial can include a criminal history of violence, sexual misconduct, domestic violence, drug trafficking and/or prostitution.
Do you accept pets?
There are no pets allowed in family housing. Senior housing allows pets on approval. Service animals are allowed.
Is there help for security deposits or first month’s rent?
CIHA does not offer assistance for security or first month’s rent but there are partner agencies who work with CIHA who do offer these programs for qualified clients. Catholic Social Services and Cook Inlet Tribal Council are two agencies that help in these specific areas.
Do you accept Section 8 vouchers?
Yes, we accept Section 8 vouchers from AHFC at all properties.
